And she’s off!

March 21st, 2011 · 8 Comments · bike, biking, hayley, islabike, lucy, video, wheels

Last week, with a little help from Mummy, Lucy got straight up and running on a proper bike at the first attempt. She had been pestering Hayley all morning to let her have a go and when she got her chance she took it with some aplomb. So she is riding at exactly 3 years […]

I am not a geek (but I’m open to persuasion)

March 14th, 2011 · 6 Comments · biking, health, things to do with the kids, walking

Some are born to geekdom, others have to work at it. Despite writing software and wearing glasses, I assure you that I fall into the latter category. Here’s some proof. Until I had Oliver to encourage me I had only watched the first Star Wars movie. And I never watched Star Trek after the first […]

Have you seen the weather?

November 28th, 2010 · 1 Comment · biking, illness, local, morning, photo, wheels

Goodbye sun… at 3.10pm! We British are blessed with rather good weather considering our northerly position on our planet. This green and pleasant land arises from the fact that we have a temperate climate, warm and wet. Perhaps it is this tendency for moderate weather conditions that leads us to be so woefully under-prepared when […]

October 23rd, 2010 · 3 Comments · biking, photo

This evening I went to a cycling event, Revolution 29, at Manchester Velodrome. There were multiple Olympic champions on show on the track including triple gold medal winner Sir Chris Hoy. It turns out these professional cyclists go really fast. Too fast for my phone camera. Who knew!

Oliver kisses me goodbye through the glass panel of the front door (November 2006). If you read Daddy blogs you’ll have read a lot about SAHDs. And there’s no doubting they are at the forefront of changing attitudes to parenting roles. But have you heard of the GTWDs? That’s right, the Go To Work Dads. […]

Lucy’s 3rd Birthday

Today, after months of claiming to be three years old, Lucy finally reached that milestone. She has her birthday party next Saturday so today we celebrated as a family. She opened a few cards over breakfast and also a couple of her bigger presents: a pushchair with doll and a micro scooter. After Oliver’s swimming […]

In the swim

July 12th, 2010 · No Comments · biking, holiday, lucy, oliver, sport, swimming

While on holiday in Majorca (retrospective post to follow, no doubt), we spent a lot of time in the swimming pool and also a few forays into the sea. As a result, Oliver, who arrived on holiday using one polystyrene swim-band on each arm, had abandoned them completely by the end of the holiday, although […]

As they might say on TV…

June 5th, 2010 · 1 Comment · biking, food, lucy, morning, oliver, photo

Breakfast at McDonald’s: 5 quid. Cycling to Subway for lunch, towing Oliver on the tag-a-long bike: 6 quid plus some sweating. Spending the day with my son then having him tell me, unprompted, what a great day he had with me: priceless!

Oliver and Lucy at the start, Mummy in background with bike and fellow riders. Being a Dad is not just about what we do ourselves, it is sometimes about supporting the rest of our family in what they want to do. And with that excuse, this Fatherhood Friday I am turning the spotlight on my […]

BBC NEWS | Africa | Malawi: A mother's race against time Several years ago when Hayley was pregnant with Oliver, we saw a fireman’s bike in a mini museum in Prague. I’m not sure how much real use it saw, perhaps none at all. But here is a genuinely life-saving bicycle, used as an ambulance […]
