Quiet time?

April 6th, 2011 · 5 Comments · bedtime, lucy, parenting, photo, sleep, tantrums

Babies sleep. A lot. Older children also need a lot of sleep. The trouble is, they don’t always want it. The 12 hours from 7pm to 7am should primarily be a time of quiet in our house. It is rarely so. OK, the kids do tend to be asleep not long after 8pm, but on […]

Storytime

March 4th, 2011 · 1 Comment · books, local, lucy, photo, politics, reading, stockport

Lucy had a story read to her today at the library. The reader was our Member of Parliament, Ann Coffey! Apparently Lucy turned up late to proceedings, dragging over a chair to sit right in front of Ann (as pictured). Hayley reported that Ann read the story very well and Lucy enjoyed it.

Have you seen the weather?

November 28th, 2010 · 1 Comment · biking, illness, local, morning, photo, wheels

Goodbye sun… at 3.10pm! We British are blessed with rather good weather considering our northerly position on our planet. This green and pleasant land arises from the fact that we have a temperate climate, warm and wet. Perhaps it is this tendency for moderate weather conditions that leads us to be so woefully under-prepared when […]

What’s on my…

Bookshelf Just finished: “One Day” by David Nicholls. Engaging if seemingly plodding at first, it lulled me in then hit me with a killer punch. Just starting: “The Spirit Level – Why Equality is Better For Everyone” by Richard Wilkinson and Kate Pickett. A book that claims to expose that “almost everything – from life […]

It takes two, baby

A quick search showed that (based on 2006 data), although two children remains the most common family size in the UK, the average number of children per […]

Fresh afresh

November 20th, 2010 · 2 Comments · first, food, local, lucy, oliver, photo

When Oliver was not yet a toddler, I used to take him for toast on Saturday mornings at a local cafe called “Fresh”. This morning we returned, but now of course with his little sister in tow. Surprisingly, given that we haven’t been there since he was a toddler, he remembered the place. He ate […]

Apple-picking (2010)

November 14th, 2010 · No Comments · education, food, health, laughter, lucy, oliver, photo, video

Last year’s apple-picking trip to my Dad’s house was much earlier than this year’s. I was wondering whether our 6 week delay would mean that the birds would have plundered them all by now, but no, there was a good crop left to be had. Both kids helped with the harvest: Oliver shaking branches and […]

Saturday Snap – Revolution Cycling

October 23rd, 2010 · 3 Comments · biking, photo

This evening I went to a cycling event, Revolution 29, at Manchester Velodrome. There were multiple Olympic champions on show on the track including triple gold medal winner Sir Chris Hoy. It turns out these professional cyclists go really fast. Too fast for my phone camera. Who knew!
