On bees

As part of breakfast this morning, Oliver and I ate toasted English muffins with margarine and honey.

Oliver: Do bees make honey?
Daddy: Yes.
Oliver: How do they make it?
Daddy (trying to remember): They collect nectar from the flowers and take it back to their nest to make the honey.
Oliver: But how do they make it?
Daddy (stumped): Erm, I don’t really know what they do to make it.
Oliver: Do they have an oven?
Daddy: No they don’t need an oven.
Oliver: Do we make honey for the bees?
Daddy: No, only bees can make honey.
Oliver: Do they make it for us?
Daddy: They make it for themselves but we take some.
Oliver: Do they know they make it for us?
Daddy: Not really, but they don’t seem to mind.
Oliver: That’s really nice of them.

Later I found this overview of what bees do to make honey. Maybe I’ll get the chance to tell him tonight, but more likely he’ll have moved on to a new question.

I love these little conversations. Another recent one was “how do we make paper?”. After a flustered attempt to generalise about the use of wood chips and chemicals I was forced to look that one up to!
