5 Steps to Greater Wellbeing

I just came across these “5 Steps to Greater Wellbeing” on the BBC website, offered by Dr Peter Kinderman, Professor of Clinical Psychology.

I know from perosnal experience that all five of the suggestions are activities that could easily start to take a back-seat when you have children. Conversely, there are definitely ways to make sure you get the benefit of all five.

There’s no particular reason to post them now except that I tend to agree with them. And there’s never a bad time to find greater wellbeing.

  • Connect with others – making links with other people is vital to mental health.
  • Be active and try to keep fit – There is a close relationship between physical health and mental health.
  • Take notice of surroundings – a mindful engagement with the world is important.
  • Learn something new every day – It’s very important to keep our minds active and growing, even if it’s just Googling something we heard on the radio.
  • Give to neighbours and communities – People who give time and energy to other people seem to have higher levels of wellbeing
