Apple-picking (2010)

Last year’s apple-picking trip to my Dad’s house was much earlier than this year’s. I was wondering whether our 6 week delay would mean that the birds would have plundered them all by now, but no, there was a good crop left to be had.

Both kids helped with the harvest: Oliver shaking branches and picking up apples, Lucy holding open the bag into which he placed them.

The foray into our mini-orchard also had the advantage of being educational. Earlier, as we ate toasted tea cakes in my Dad’s kitchen, as if on cue, Oliver had asked his Grandad how trees grow. So when we took our trip over the road to gather apples, I got the chance to re-iterate the relationship between the pips in his apple and the trees that grow. I know he knew it in theory already, but seeing those wind-fallen apples lying on the ground starting to decay was better than any classroom lesson.

And of course there’s nothing better than eating an apple freshly picked from the tree.

It’s such a great little excursion, this annual apple-picking. Quite apart from the afore-mentioned educational aspects, both kids got to climb trees (albeit low branches 12 inches off the ground) and of course they always love to see their Grandad. It was the first thing Oliver mentioned when he woke this morning. And when it turns out there are odd-looking brown sheep in the field at the back, well that’s just an added bonus, much like seeing my son and my Dad laughing together is at the end of this clip.
